Diet High in Processed Meats and Low in Mixed Vegetables and Legumes Associated With Early-Onset Adenomas

Diet High in Processed Meats and Low in Mixed Vegetables and Legumes Associated With Early-Onset Adenomas

Douglas K. Rex, MD, MASGE, reviewing Nguyen LH, et al. Gastroenterology 2021 Jul 14.

This study utilized the Nurses’ Health Study II data to evaluate a sulfur microbial diet (high intake of processed meats and low intake of vegetables and legumes) with the risk of colorectal cancer precursors. Among 2911 cases of early-onset adenomas, after adjustment for known risk factors, a higher sulfur microbial diet had a significant odds ratio of 1.31 for adenomas but not for serrated lesions.

COMMENT

We continue to see an accumulation of various diet and lifestyle factors associated with the rising risk of cancer in young people, including reduced dairy intake, higher rates of obesity, alcohol intake, and higher consumption of sugary drinks during teenage years.

Note to readers: At the time we reviewed this paper, its publisher noted that it was not in final form and that subsequent changes might be made.
