Motorized Spiral Enteroscopy Effective for Previous Incomplete Colonoscopies Related to Redundant Colon

Douglas K. Rex, MD, MASGE, reviewing Al-Toma A, et al. Endosc Int Open 2022 Jun 3.

The motorized spiral enteroscope has been shown to be safe and effective for deep enteroscopy.

This study from a single center included 36 patients who had a previous incomplete colonoscopy, defined by failed cecal intubation or the inability to position the endoscope for right-sided polypectomy. All 36 procedures performed for this study were successfully completed with the motorized spiral enteroscope, with no complications.

COMMENT

There are two major causes of prior incomplete colonoscopies: (1) redundant colon and (2) narrowed and angulated sigmoid. This device would clearly not be appropriate for a narrowed or angulated sigmoid. Patients were all referred internally, so they may not represent the severely redundant colons often encountered in referral centers.
