Smartphone Apps on Bowel Preparation for Colonoscopy Improve Bowel Prep and Increase Adenoma Detection Rate

Douglas K. Rex, MD, MASGE, reviewing Li P, et al. J Gastroenterol Hepatol 2022 Apr 5.

This is a meta-analysis of 12 eligible randomized controlled trials with a total of 4165 patients that compared the effect of education using a smartphone app versus conventional education on bowel preparation for colonoscopy.

The rate of adequate bowel preparation in the smartphone group was 86.6% versus 76.7% in the control group (P<.01).

In 8 studies with reported adenoma detection rates (ADR), the ADR was 26.2% with smartphone education versus 19.3% without (P<.05).

COMMENT

In all of the control groups in this study, conventional instructions were both written and verbal. These data provide strong support for adding smartphone app education to bowel preparation instructions.
